European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the case was “another example” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts point out that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
