Seven accused members of Germany's far-left group face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or remain detained.”
