Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.
An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities
Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The narrative commences when the couple relocate from the big city to the rural area for her career. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.
Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.
Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.
Allegory and Meaning
While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience today.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
