TikTok Grants Users Control to Limit AI-Generated Content in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that allows them to lessen the quantity of AI-created videos appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the platform disclosed that it now features over 1 bn AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The new functionality is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a full-scale launch. This shift aligns with a surge in content created by AI, driven by recent AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

Studies have shown that almost a tenth of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a competing service primarily display AI-generated videos. A large amount of this material is considered low-quality AI content, a term for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is often illogical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that a lot of users like content produced via AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to educational videos, and we want to provide users the ability to increase or decrease of that, based on their own likes,” said a platform representative.

AI on the Platform

The platform shared that there are presently over a billion videos on its service tagged as artificially created. Overall, more than 100 million videos are submitted to the platform every day, making AI-generated material a limited portion of its complete catalog.

Customizing Your Feed

Users will be capable of limit or boost the level of AI-generated videos they watch by opening the content preference setting in the app and choosing AI-made media. Other topics that can already be controlled under the setting encompass news, clothing, aesthetics, and dance.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s rules mandate content makers to tag lifelike artificially created content, and it forbids malicious deepfakes of celebrities or emergencies. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is without a tag can be removed under its terms of service.

Additionally, the platform will from now on apply an AI-generated watermark to content made using its own AI tools, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for spotting content made by AI. This step is designed to deter users from trying to circumvent the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

The platform is furthermore launching a $2m awareness program for professionals and institutions to produce learning resources about ethical AI use. This initiative will benefit non-profit groups dedicated to teaching computer science.

Platform Protection

The platform has supported its moderation strategy, following discussion over intentions to lay off a large number of safety staff in the United Kingdom. The company is expected to reduce hundreds of positions in its content moderation department in its British office, with trade unions and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by automated systems.

A company official stated that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by filtering out the most distressing content before it has to be seen by people. The platform reported a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content reviewed by human moderators over the past year due to the use of its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to combine people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we also think it’s extremely critical to limit contact with dangerous material as rapidly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is really helping us process content quickly.”
